Hypnotic Induction and Importance of Eye Fixation Technique

Any phenomenon which is described as dynamic has a problem associated with it in that such a phenomenon is always in a constant flux. Hypnosis being dynamic and constantly evolving in nature is no exception to this. For this reason, in spite of significant strides achieved in unravelling many mysteries of hypnosis through on going research and development, yet there is an element of enigma surrounding it that has not yet unfolded to the medical and scientific community. Nonetheless, it is necessary for us to realize the maximum benefit hypnosis as an art and science offers to humanity by using what is known instead of searching for the unknown. We would discuss about one such known process, viz, hypnotic induction, which is considered to be first step to realize the benefits it can confer on us. A proper understanding of hypnotic induction then becomes a sine quo non for reaping the real benefits of hypnosis. First we shall describe this process and follow it up by enumerating the important role of one particular technique, viz, eye fixation, in successfully realizing such an induction process.
Hypnosis induction is a process that consists of a series of instructions and suggestions which are put forth by a trained hypnotist to his/her subject. It is a fundamental requirement if one were to realize the value that hypnosis offers as without being hypnotically inducted, the person to be hypnotized would not open the conscious mind and when the conscious mind is closed the avenue for receptive mind is also closed. In short where the mind is not induced, the hypnotherapy is of no use.
Of all the techniques that are available in carrying out the induction process, the most effective one is found in the 'eye fixation' technique. It may be recalled that the Scottish Surgeon, James Braid, who succeeded in performing his surgeries by applying hypnotherapy relied on the 'eye-fixation' technique. For this reason this technique is also nicknamed 'braidism'. Eye fixation as a hypnotic technique requires the dangling of a shiny objected at a distance of eight to fifteen inches from the subject's eyes. Such a dangling is carried out in a left to right wavy motion in slow speed. The person to be hypnotized focuses on the shiny object by applying as much as strain as possible in his/her eyelids through the gazing process. While doing so, the eyes as well as the mind would have to stay fixed on the object. The effect of this would be observed after a while in that the person's pupils would first contract and then get dilated. During this moment, the hypnotist would have to bring the object closer and closer towards the forehead of subject in a way the object is placed in a relatively higher position than what it was earlier. This would force the person to keep the eyes shut. Once this happens, it is an indication to the hypnotist that he/she has successfully completed the induction process on his client.
When the induction process is achieved, it enables the hypnotists to bypass the critical conscious mind and gain access to the sub-conscious mind where the suggestions could be implanted in an easier manner. The hypnotized person is also placed in a high state of receptivity as he/she would have shut their minds to things that are surrounding them during which time their senses are focused only on the words being said to them by the hypnotist.
It may be stated in conclusion that one of the critical objectives of hypnotherapy is to bring in emotional and or behavioral modifications in the person's attitude and when the attitude changes, the altitude is conquered with ease. What ever may be the negative circumstances in which the person is placed, an avenue towards relief is opened and when there is relief, it sets off a sense of well being, which can be in the mental or physical or both the states.
